WHO WE ARE

Hello and welcome to Spellbound Cattery.  My name is Lesley Gaze and I live with my husband Andrew and our two adult sons Brett and Nathan on a lifestyle block in the semi- rural area of Margate, in Tasmania, Australia.  I was raised on a lifestyle block and have been surrounded by animals for the whole of my life.  While growing up they were my friends, companions and confidants.  My teenage years were spent riding horses and competing and then in my late teens I started breaking and training horses for showing.  I even kept a donkey for several years that I also broke in and trained.  I currently have a miniature horse named Ned, a miniature cow named Tabby, a few French Bulldogs and my family of Birman cats.

After many years of breaking horses my injuries caught up with me and with time it became very painful to even sit on a horse, let alone break and train them.  I knew my time as a horse trainer was over and it was time to do something else.  So the horses were gradually placed in new homes as the right one’s became available and in 2001, I registered as a breeder of the beautiful Birman Cat. ‘Spellbound Cattery’ had been established.

It took very little time for the cats to replace the loss that I felt from not being able to ride anymore.  My days were now filled with caring for cats, raising beautiful babies and searching for the perfect homes for my little ones.  I also started showing Birmans and have done extremely well in the show ring.  My babies were fast becoming’ sort after’ by other breeders and I started travelling interstate to some of the bigger shows, like The Nationals and Birman Speciality shows.  To this day my kittens and cats are doing well in the show ring, not only in Tasmania, but also in most states of Australia and also overseas.

I never stop learning more about cats, breeding and the Birman standard.  My quest is never ending to strive for perfection in the appearance, temperament and breeding the perfect Birman Cat.

With time people that had purchased kittens or cats from me started asking me to care for their pet while they went away on holidays. It was easy at first as I had spare room in my cattery all the time to take an extra one on a short term basis.  With time it became harder to find room and more people were asking me to care for their pets so I established a need for a purpose built cattery to look after other people’s cats while they were away on holidays.

In 2013 we started to build a new cattery for visitors that eventually became Cosy Cats Luxury Cat Hotel and it  was opened for business in December of 2013.  With the opening of Cosy Cats I was able to leave my part time job as a Housekeeper of a Boutique Hotel known as’ Villa Howden’ and  work from home caring for my animals and visiting boarders.

I think I have the best job in the world.  It is such a pleasure to spend my days caring for animals that in return give me so much affection, entertainment and enjoyment.  Where else could I go to work and be greeted by so many happy faces, just waiting for their pats and cuddles each morning?
